Wi-Fi BlackBerry 8820

Research in Motion (RIM) has announced it's latest BlackBerry 8820 smart phone, which is the first dual-mode BlackBerry to provide wireless voice and data access over both cellular and Wi-Fi networks.

The BlackBerry 8820 combines EDGE/GPRS/GSM cellular with Wi-Fi connectivity and has a full QWERTY keyboard, a very user-friendly trackball navigation system, large and bright display (320 x 240), user-friendly trackball navigation, and voice and data functionality.

The BlackBerry 8820 also includes built-in GPS functionality, new enhancements in RIM’s media player as well as a microSD expandable memory slot that supports up to 32GB cards. The BlackBerry 8820 smartphone also comes with voice-activated dialing, conference calling, speed dialing and dedicated keys for muting calls as well as for performing other functions.

The Wi-Fi BlackBerry supports the 802.11 a/b/g Wi-Fi standards to enable data access over Wi-Fi connections. It is capable of working in conjunction with both Enterprise Server and Internet Service. Users can switch between cellular networks and Wi-Fi networks to access email, instant messaging, organizer, Web browsing, and other mobile data applications.

The BlackBerry 8820 has a new desktop media manager - the Roxio Media Manager for BlackBerry based on the Roxio Easy Media Creator 9. It also features a speakerphone and Bluetooth 2.0 support. The ultra-thin, high-capacity battery is removable and this further extends the exceptional battery life for which BlackBerry handsets are known.

RIM's smart phone is compliant with Wi-Fi security protocols, including WEP (Wireless Equivalency Protocol), WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access), and WPA2, as well as Cisco Compatible Extensions for simple, secure connectivity with Cisco wireless solutions.

The thin Wi-Fi enabled BlackBerry 8820 will soon be available from select wireless carriers.
