Order of the Phoenix grosses $330 million worldwide

The latest in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which was released in India on Friday, took the box office by storm, with multiplexes everywhere reporting packed houses. The opening was 80-90% at most screens, said multiplex owners.

Despite a strong showing, the Potter mania didn’t manage to break Spiderman 3’s opening weekend record of Rs 19 crore. In fact, trade sources indicated that Harry Potter’s opening collections would not exceed Rs 8-10 crore at best for the weekend.

Potter’s debut movie, Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone, which was released in 2000, garnered around Rs 2.5 crore at the Indian box office, while the last Potter sequel Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which hit the big screen in 2005, raked in close to Rs 5 crore for the opening weekend.

Trade sources said despite Potter’s strong franchise in India, the film would not beat previous record holders such as Casino Royale and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

The official numbers, though, are yet to be released by Warner Brothers. The movie releases with a total of 250 prints across four languages — English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Meanwhile, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has grossed $330 million worldwide in its first weekend in theatres, making it the largest worldwide opening in the Warner Brothers’ history. It also is the largest opening for the franchise. The previous record for the studio and the franchise was Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004, which raked in $207 million worldwide.

The US box office earned a record $140 million for the five-day opening. Internationally, the movie has made $190 million across 44 markets. In addition, Warner Brothers Pictures International passed the $1-billion mark in overseas box office receipts over the weekend, fuelled by the success of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix also surpassed Imax industry records, becoming the biggest opening of all time. The film will open on 126 Imax screens worldwide — 91 in the US — with many featuring the final scenes of the film in Imax 3D, more than any previous release.

The latest Harry Potter adventure to hit the big screen comes less than two weeks before the July 21 release of the seventh and final book in JK Rowling’s series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
