Now get paid to receive SMS ads on your mobile

SMS advertisements need no longer be that perennial pain in the neck! Indeed, if a Bangalore-based company has its way, the adverts might actually help mobile users make a quick buck or two!

Bangalore-based mGinger.com has come out with a novel idea to pay users to receive SMS adverts.

Started by three engineers, the company plans to use what is called 'permission-based marketing' to make SMS advertising a lucrative proposition for both users and advertisers.

Chaitanya Nallan, CEO of mGinger, and an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, explains that mGinger actually tries to eliminate spam from users' phones. Only, it does this in such a way that ads turn into useful information on users' phones.

Apparently, the idea originated thanks to Veerendra Shivhare, COO of mGinger. Like everyone else, he was fed up with advertisers bombarding his phone with unwanted ads without express permission.

So to get paid for receiving SMS adverts, people need to log on to mGinger.com, and register themselves with their mobile phone numbers and the kind of ads they want to receive.

The good part is users get to dictate the number of ads they want, and when they want to receive them.

For every advert received, mGinger pays 20 paise to the mobile user; for every referral, 10 paise.

The referrals go up to 2 levels and then stop. The company pays a user by cheque once he/she crosses a minimum limit of Rs 300.

Nallan says people can make anywhere between Rs 300 and Rs 1,600 per month; enough at least to pay their own mobile phone bills.

Meanwhile, Nallan claims mGinger has already run 8 campaigns in different sectors, and that the Web site that was launched on April 19 this year, has registerd over 3 lakh users already.

Miss Japan crowned Miss Universe 2007

Riyo Mori, Miss Japan 2007, a 20-year-old dancer from Japan was crowned Miss Universe 2007 on Monday night, marking only the second time her country has won the world beauty title.

Dressed in a black, red and purple Japanese-style gown, Riyo Mori nervously grabbed the hands of first runner-up, Natalia Guimaraes of Brazil, just before the winner was announced. Then she threw her hands up and covered her mouth, overcome with emotion.

But she gathered herself together enough to catch the diamond-and-pearl-studded headpiece valued at $250,000 as it slipped off her head when Miss Universe 2006 Zuleyka Rivera of Puerto Rico crowned her. Mori immediately placed it back on her head.

The last time Japan won the pageant was in 1959 when Akiko Kojima became the first Miss Universe from Asia.

Mori, from the small town of Shizuoka at the base of Mount Fuji, won the cheers of the Mexico City audience when she opened her interview, saying 'Hola, Mexico!'

"I learned how to always be happy, be patient and to be positive, and this is what I want to teach to the next generation," she said during the interview competition.

The daughter of a dance school operator, Mori said her grandmother told her as a child that she wanted her to be Miss Japan before she turned 20.

"From the very beginning, I entered the competition with high hopes and an unswerving determination to make this dream a reality," she said in a pre-competition interview.

"Right now I am only 20 years old, so I'm really excited about what I'm going to be able to do at this age to benefit society," Mori said after winning.

Pageant organizers say the Miss Universe contest carefully selects women who are intelligent, well-mannered and cultured. The celebrity judges included actor James Kyson Lee, model Lindsay Clubine, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, rocker Dave Navarro, Olympic figure skating champion Michelle Kwan, celebrity hairstylist Ken Paves, fashion designer Marc Bouwer, "Project Runway" judge and Elle magazine fashion director Nina Garcia and former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres.

Sparks, 17, of Glendale, Arizona, prevailed over beatboxer Blake Lewis, 25, after a triumphant performance Tuesday that wowed the show's judges and the viewers who gave her a majority of the record 74 million votes cast.

"Mom, Dad, I love you," Sparks, the daughter of retired NFL player Phillippi Sparks, said tearfully after a bearhug from Lewis.

The contest came down to either the stronger singer, Sparks, or the better entertainer, Lewis. Sparks delivered her songs simply and powerfully; Lewis' flourishes included his sound-effects beatboxing and sharp dance moves.

The finale pulled out the stops and the stars, with Gwen Stefani, Smokey Robinson, Tony Bennett, Bette Midler, Green Day and more performing.

The two-hour show opened with Lewis and Sparks dueting on the Beatles "I Saw Her Standing There," followed quickly by a touring Stefani singing "4 in the Morning" via satellite from Massachusetts.

Midler took the stage as the show came toward its close, singing "The Wind Beneath My Wings."

Past "Idol" winners and this season's contestants got a hefty share of attention, starting with first-season winner Kelly Clarkson. She performed her new single "Never Again," with the gritty rock song matched by her black dress and thigh-high boots.

Carrie Underwood, the fourth-season idol, sang "I'll Stand by You" and was honored by legendary music mogul Clive Davis for reaching 6 million in sales for her debut album, "Some Hearts."

Taylor Hicks, last season's winner, also had his moment in the finale sun, as did Ruben Studdard, the winner from year two.

Robinson, a Motown great, performed "Being with You" after the top six male contestants, including fan fave Sanjaya Malakar, sang "Ooh Baby Baby," a hit for Robinson and his group the Miracles.

Blake, whose beat-boxing scored with viewers, performed with veteran rapper Doug E. Fresh on his old hit, "The Show." It was a signature moment for a contest that has introduced young viewers to Gershwin and other standards.
