Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) has partnered with Chennai-based Novatium to launch its Rs 4,500 PC for consumers in Delhi and Mumbai. It is a low-cost access device, which will enable subscribers to get the benefits of a PC.
The finer details of the partnership and the offer price for the device was announced by the Communications and IT Minister, A. Raja.
The PC will not have the common hardware found on a typical PC and will not have a regular CPU or any storage device. MTNL will connect the terminals to a centralised server in the locality, and will provide the PC with Internet access. All applications and consumers' data will be stored on MTNL's server. Customers also have the choice for going in for either Windows or Linux operating systems.

Novatium had earlier launched its Net PC which enables users to get a computing system with online software applications such as word, presentation tools, spreadsheets, surf the Internet, learn on education packages, play games and music online for a monthly fee. There are also no hassles of having to maintain the system or threats of virus because the device is remotely managed by the company. The software or applications are automatically upgraded by the company. Users are also given a memory space of 2GB on the central server.
The Novatium website says, "The netPC reaches to your home on a network cable just like a cable television service or broadband. Metro-ethernet deployments are quickly becoming a pervasive reality, and hence instead of just the internet broadband to your home, one can ask for a complete desktop with inbuilt internet access, educational packages, online games, chat, webcam, productivity suites and much more only served on the Nova netPC."
High cost of owning a full fledged PC is one of the biggest bottlenecks for the increase of broadband services in India. The MTNL - Novatium partnership will bring down the investment considerably for the consumer taking a broadband connection.
