BlackBerry 8800 launched in India

(RIM) Research in Motion has launched their much awaited BlackBerry 8800 device in the Indian market. The BlackBerry 8800 is the thinnest Blackberry handset yet, at 14mm.

It comes loaded with a full QWERTY keyboard; multimedia features; a microSD expandable memory; and trackball navigation system. Blackberry 8800 is also the first product from the company to include GPS features. Blackberry 8800 will deliver best-in-class performance with smoothly integrated support for voice and data applications, including phone, email, text messaging, Web browser, organizer, multimedia, and more. It is powered by an ultra-thin, high-capacity battery.

The quad-band GSM/GPRS and EDGE-enabled BlackBerry 8800 has advanced phone features including noise cancellation; speaker independent voice recognition for voice activated dialling (VAD); intuitive call management functions such as smart dialling, conference calling, speed dialling, and call forwarding; as well as dedicated send, end, and mute keys. It also features a high quality, low-distortion speakerphone and Bluetooth 2.0 for use with hands-free headsets, car kits, and other Bluetooth peripherals, and supports polyphonic, mp3, and MIDI ring tones.

BlackBerry 800 has a large, ultra-bright, high resolution (320 x 240) landscape screen. The built-in light sensing technology also automatically adjusts the screen, keyboard, and trackball brightness depending on the environment.

The BlackBerry 8800 can operate on BlackBerry's internet service, giving users the ability to manage up to 10 supported personal and corporate email accounts, as well as BlackBerry Enterprise Server, which includes IT policy controls for managing the smart phone's features and usage.

The handset has a standby time of 22 days and a talk time of 5 hours. However, a few features missing in this new handset include a camera, Wi-Fi, and infrared.

As per the company, a camera has not been included in the handset consciously, as this is a business phone, and many business areas do not allow camera phones.

BlackBerry 8800 is to be made available by both Hutch and Airtel. It is priced at Rs. 31,990.
