HCL Infosystems has launched MiLeap, a fully functional, portable range of laptops at a starting price of Rs 13,990.
Allied Computers (ACI) had announced laptops priced at Rs 14,999 a couple of days back. Billed as the world’s cheapest ultra-portable laptop, the MiLeap would be available in two series, X and Y, at a starting price of Rs 13,990 and Rs 29,990 respectively.
The X series would have both flash-based and disk-based storage options, with a Linux-based operating system. The most expensive model of the series would be available at Rs 16,990.
The first of the products is the MiLeap X series at Rs 13,990, a 1.4kg ultra portable with a 7" LCD, running Linux with a GUI. The X-series has 2GB flash-based storage instead of a hard drive, built-in wireless, USB and PC Card socket. It has soft faux-leather cladding to make it shock-resistant, which allows it to be carried without a laptop case.

The 980 g laptop has multiple navigation (thumboard, stylus, keyboard, touch and voice), The Y series has a 1.8" 80GB hard drive, and a battery life similar to the X-series, of about 4 hours. It’s priced at Rs 29,990.
The laptops have built-in Wi-Fi, and use Intel mobile processors. network ports, and have an option for a data card. Weighing less than a kilogram, the MiLeap laptops have a 7-inch screen and an Intel processor.
The laptops will be available from January 26 at all HCL retail outlets and distribution centres.
“Unlike a few years ago, when only companies bought laptops, home users are now buying them. While desktops are growing annually by 15-18 per cent, the laptop market is expected to grow by 80-100 per cent,” said Vinnie Meta, executive director of the Manufacturers’ Association for Information Technology (MAIT).
