Google has introduced the Google SMS service for Indian mobile users. Through this beta offering, users can avail of the Google Search tool without the need of a computer or an internet enabled phone.
Services on offer include Local Search, Weather, Glossary, Movies, Q&A, Translation, Web Snippets, Calculator and Currency Conversion.
Through the ‘Google SMS’ mobile messaging service, users can get business listings and movie show timings, just by sending a text message to the shortcode, which is 54664, from their mobile phones.
This service can even provide local information such as movie timings, restaurants, local hospitals and taxi services etc. Searching through the Google SMS service is simple. For e.g., if users wants information about pizzerias in Andheri West, user can type “pizza andheri west mumbai” and send a SMS to 54664. Google will reply with the list of pizza restaurants in that area.
Google also has included personalization features, as per which a frequently queried location is saved as a users default location. Thus, if no location is specified in an SMS, Google returns results based on that location. Google also powers search on Airtel Live.
The Google SMS service is currently available to Airtel, Aircel, BPL, BSNL and Reliance subscribers located at Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. Users will have to pay premium messaging rates while using the service.
