The result is out and the appraisal review didn’t exactly go as you planned. You have been ignored for the promotion you were confident of. Devastating as it may be, don’t take your wounded ego and pack off to the hills right away.
Try this before a missed promotion gets on top of you:
Stay Cool
It’s not wise to barge into your boss’ office and demand to know why you didn’t get the promotion. Instead, try sorting out your feelings with someone outside your company. Find a friend (outside office) and discuss the situation with them until you calm down.
Set Up a Meeting with Your Boss
Set up a meeting with your supervisor and let them know how badly you wanted the promotion. Instead of being confrontational, ask them what issues or skills you need to work on to better your chances of getting that job in the future.
Figure Out Your New Position in Office
Regardless of the reason you’re passed over for a promotion, the question of “fit” needs to be addressed. Often the position isn’t really the best fit for you either because you don’t have the right qualifications or your personality doesn’t seem to match the particular role.
Assess Yourself
It’s an excellent time to take stock of your life and career and figure out why you wanted it in the first place. Do you want a pay raise? Do you want to change in your job profile? Expand your role in the company? Or is it because you are just bored in your current position?
Move on if Nothing Works
There are times when you are just not a good fit in a company and your career path is non-existent. If this is the case, find a new company that can use your talents and skills better. Learn from the experience and move on.
