Mozilla has announced the availability of Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 for download. This development will deliver new features to Firefox users along with easier, faster and secured internet access.
Not only its features but also the look of the browser has been changed. Firefox will now be available in a new interface, based on user feedback.
Some of the features introduced in Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 are:
1. Fixes and improvements to platform features to improve security, web compatibility and stability.
2. Continued performance improvements
3. Speed, memory use and reliability are some of the improved attributes. Applications like Google Mail and Zoho Office are claimed to run at a double speed of what Firefox 2 ran at. Moreover, Mozilla says that a new memory allocator reduces fragmentation, hundreds of leaks have been fixed and caching strategies have been tuned.
4. The reliability of the browser is increased, thanks to a transactionally secure database format. Bookmarks, history, cookies and preferences are now stored in this transactionally secure database format, which will prevent data loss even if the system crashes. Some of the security improvements featured in Firefox 3 include malware protection, a new web forgery protection page, new SSL error pages, secure add-on updates and version checks, better antivirus integration when it comes to downloads, and compatibility with Vista parental controls.
Some features making the browser easier to use include improved password management, easier add-on installation, a new download manager, support for full page zoom, a prompt to save tabs on exit, better plugin management and better integration with Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.
Firefox 3 will also feature improved personalization through a smart bookmarks folder which includes access to more frequently visited pages and a place organizer which enables users to view, organize and search through their bookmarks, tags and browsing history. Another improvement allows users to utilize their webmail provider to handle mailto: links rather than being forced to use desktop applications to send email.
The Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 is available in more than 45 languages. A final release is still expected to come in June.
